Definitely dig your suggestion of the experienced people to spend some of their time leading the inexperienced.

I think the primary problem with these people working together is most of them probably are working on their "labor of love" projects and they need to see their own shit through. Collaborating on those projects can be difficult; compromises need to be made that maybe the experienced aren't willing to make because they are already working on a game they don't love during their day jobs.

Would be cool to see that happen tho.

Another good read Doolwind, this is certainly the best site I've stumbled onto all year ;)

Walkingman, the advice I can give - write your 'dream' down. An idea is only as good as you can communicate it, and I feel that a lot of indie or beginner game devs don't place enough emphasis on documentation.

Well, im part of the "group 4" no time and no experience haha; however, i am persuing a computer programming degree, and I am trying to see if game development involves alot of the same aspects as regular programming. I aspire to create my own business, first with programming to get my feet wet and then hopefully with game development. My friends and I have a dream and a few really good ideas and are currently trying to piece our dream together, any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks for posting the information, great article :)

Thanks for the info Roman. As I've mentioned in a previous blog, I feel as though I've come to a cross-roads in my life, and working part-time (or even teaching) is certainly one of the options high up on my list. I'm glad to hear that someone else has taken this avenue and had success.

Thankfully Australia's cost of living isn't too high, although it's not as low as I'd like, it simply means I may need to dedicate 2-3 days per week to working so I can afford to do my own thing the other 4-5 days.

Well, there are few factors :D I started learning programming as a kid (10 years old?). I finished and published my first AMIGA game when I was 17. At the moment I am an academic teacher and that gives me plenty of time to work on my games (though I wanna quit teaching to have even more time to work on my games). Then, I have a business experience. I've been running a web development/marketing company for 2 years before I got borred and decided to come back to games development. And last, but not least, I am freaking good (it surprises me the most), at finding good people for my team. People, that don't eat all my budget :D

Ah, there's more - I'm from Poland - that makes my expenses quite low ;-)

Please tell me your secret!! :) I've been trying to figure out how to become a member of this illusive 3rd group for a while now, however bills and rent keep me from it.

In truth, there are the 4 full groups, the extra two being those with experience and time (very few and far between) and those with no experience and no time (the majority of the world).

I'm sure that beside those 2 groups that you mention is the 3rd one - experience people with time. I'm one of those people in the third group.
