shiva:

You're right there. It is important to know when you just can't finish what you started. Perhaps a more apt statement would be:

"Make sure you can finish what you start"

Perhaps a way of getting around this is to reailse once you've gone down the path of trouble and making new goals which you can reach and then bail on the project if that's your only option. For example, you may have aimed to high with a game idea so perhaps getting it to an alpha state, or even just getting it playable should be your goal.

I agree that working on multiple projects may be a good idea. In general I would err on the side of caution, however it may be a good alternative to give yourself (or your development team) a break and the opportunity to refocus.

3D Realms is a laughing stock? Hey, they are still around! That's doing better than majority of Game studios.

All good and valid points.

Lets play devil's advocate for a minute. Not everything you work on is going to be finished. It is important to recognise when something is doomed to failure. It is hard sometimes to let go; you can grow attached to the idea of the product more than the product itself. Or perhaps it's more a case of ego ("everything I do is perfect") or attachment ("but I put so much effort into it").
Stop beating the horse... it's dead.

There is nothing stopping you from working on more than one thing at a time though. So if you find yourself growing sick of the 'same old thing', start something new for a while, use each project as an outlet of a different kind. Not everything will require you to flex the same programming muscles.

I'll second the recommendation for Company of Heroes, top quality product.
